Architecture & Art
There is no question that beautiful architecture is in and of itself an artform that takes great skill and years of practice to master. Architectural and structural details however can be integral to enhancing and presenting beautiful pieces of art or even full collections. In many homes, utilizing opportunities during a renovation to accent a favorite or sentimental piece can help to personalize a space and enhance the beauty and importance of even a simple object.
Niches
Wisely placed and properly sized niches and alcoves are a very useful tool in displaying and accenting pieces of art. Placing artwork or sculptural pieces within these allocated spaces lends emphasis and importance to the piece itself by giving it a “home.” Series of niches can create opportunities to display a collection of pieces while allowing each piece to stand out individually as well. Recessed niches also can allow for the addition of accent lighting, further emphasizing and highlighting pieces of art.
Trim & Molding
Using trim or applied molding to create a visual boundary around an art piece or area can have a similar effect to a niche. Since this surface application doesn’t create a set structural parameter, there can be more flexibility in the future should any pieces be changed or replaced. However, options for accent lighting are limited to lighting available from the surrounding room or surface fixtures.
Paint & Wallpaper
Paint or wallpaper treatments can be an effective way to distinguish areas where art is displayed. Especially when within a niche or trim surround, a wall finish that brings in an accent color or texture complimentary to the pieces being displayed, creates visual weight and draws attention to the art on view.
